Interests of the class

We have a wide range of interests and hobbies in our class this year, including a variety of sports and artistic activities. All of our class places for this term’s sports clubs have been taken up and in addition we have some keen horse riders and even a boxing enthusiast!


Things planned for the year

The key aim for Year 5 is to grown into the high standards and expectations of Upper Key Stage 2. It is our mission to make sure children develop and improve their number accuracy, mathematical curiosity, manners, writing stamina, resilience and their readiness for what can be a demanding year in Year 6.


Each topic will have a hook day but we can’t reveal too much about those at this stage!

There may also be one or two special visitors or trips out of school throughout the year.

Finally, Year 5 is the year when pupils are introduced to swimming lessons. Year 5 pupils at Carrwood go swimming every Thursday morning.


Class jobs

In Sapphire, we tend not to have set ‘monitors’ as we believe everybody is responsible for the classroom. We have an elected Pupil Parliament representative as well as two digital leaders for the year, whilst table captains will be selected each half term to set the best example for those around them.


PE days and PE kit requirements

Swimming is every Thursday morning and the children need to be in school by 08:20am for an immediate departure at 08:30am. On Thursdays, it is important for swim wear to be brought in as well as a towel for after the session. The children will be back at school for around 10:20am, just in time for break and the continuation of lessons throughout the day.


We also have PE on a Friday. Children should attend school in their uniform and bring their P.E kit into school with them. Our P.E kit is as follows:

Indoor PE

  • Plain white t-shirt
  • Black shorts
  • Black pumps or trainers

Outdoor PE

  • Plain white t-shirt
  • Black tracksuit bottoms
  • Black hoody
  • Black pumps or trainers


Homework information

Homework is set at the start of the half term and is posted online, on both the class web page and on Seesaw. This is in addition to weekly times tables and spelling tests and we would encourage all pupils to make sure all homework tasks are a best effort. Homework is due each Monday.


Book changing days and reading record information

All children will bring home two reading books each week. One book will be based on their reading level, which will challenge them to improve their reading stamina, speed and accuracy. Children will also bring a ‘reading for pleasure’ book. Reading undertaken at home should be recorded through Purple Mash’s electronic reading journal. You child has their own login details for Purple Mash; if you are unsure how to access this reading journal, a ‘how to guide can be found on the school website.

Records will be kept of the amount of reading children do at home and it is important this becomes a daily habit for all children.


Year Group Authors

Our first author for the year is Adam Blade, author of the Beast Quest books. In the spring term our year group author is Shaun Tan and in the summer term we will look at Emma Carroll’s work.
