Promoting British Values

British Values at Carrwood Primary School

At Carrwood Primary School we actively promote the British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs.

These British Values are not taught as standalone. They are embedded throughout school life and can be seen in aspects such as assemblies, collective worship, throughout the curriculum, through pupil leadership opportunities, through school trips and visits and through positive relationships between pupils, staff and families.

Democracy in Action:

Here at Carrwood, we ensure everyone has a voice and the opportunity to be heard. Children learn that their opinions matter and that decisions can be made fairly through discussion and voting.

Each year group holds an annual election in order to select a Pupil Parliament member for their class. Pupil Parliament meet regularly to discuss on-going school actions raised by pupils and find solutions together.

Children have opportunities to share their views through pupil surveys and questionnaires, class discussions and debates. Children also learn about democracy through the curriculum and current events.

Rule of Law in Action:

The Rule of Law helps children understand why rules are important and how they keep us safe and happy. Children learn that rules apply to everyone and that choices have consequences.

At Carrwood we have three clear school rules - Be Ready, Be Respectful and Be Safe.  We have positive behaviour systems and rewards and restorative conversations when things go wrong. We work closely with the police, community leaders and other professionals and we learn about laws and responsibilities through PSHE and the wider curriculum.

Individual Liberty in Action:

Individual Liberty encourages children to make safe and informed choices whilst developing independence and self-confidence.  Children learn they have rights and freedoms, alongside responsibilities towards others.

At Carrwood we want our children to develop self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence. We want them to accept responsibility for their own behaviour, show initiative and make a positive contribution to the school and local community. We encourage them to set personal goals and challenges and provide opportunities for them to lead, perform,  take responsibility and express their views respectfully.

Mutual Respect and  Tolerance of Different Faiths & Beliefs:

Respect is at the heart of our school community. We promote kindness, consideration and positive relationships. We celebrate effort and our own and others achievement and we work collaboratively with others, listening to different viewpoints. At Carrwood  we treat everyone with kindness and courtesy and we understand and value the beliefs of others.

We are proud of our diverse community and as a community we appreciate and celebrate differences. Through our curriculum we learn about a range of religions and worldviews, celebrate different cultures and traditions and challenge stereotypes and discrimination. Children learn that people may have different belief. backgrounds and traditions and that these differences should be respected and celebrated.
