Year 5 Ivy

Welcome to Year 5 Ivy!

In Year 5 Ivy our class teacher is Mr Tattersall.

Year 5 is the beginning of Upper Key Stage 2. We wear our purple jumpers with pride as we become role models for the rest of school. There is lots of new learning in Year 5 as we start preparing for Year 6 and moving to high school.

Our three school rules ‘Be Ready, Be Respectful, Be Safe’ help us to focus on our learning and maintain a positive working atmosphere. We show we are ready to learn by being prepared with the right equipment at the right time. We are respectful of ourselves, our friends and our property. We show we are safe by following the routines, expectations and instructions given in class.

Across school, we use class dojos as a way of celebrating children who follow our school rules, work hard in lessons, and show manners across school, which can then be spent during our ‘Dojo Day’ celebrations. We also have ‘Fantastic Fridays’ which reward our children who always show themselves as excellent role models, and who go above and beyond. As well as this, in Year 5 children earn raffle tickets, and we have a weekly draw where one child receives some goodies to take home.

Reading

Reading is so important to us at Carrwood and we read every day. Reading Skills lessons take place daily and there is also a reading phase in our English lessons. We love to read for pleasure and we get to pick our own  book from either our school library or our class reading corner.

Our Year Group Authors are:

  • Frank Cottrell-Boyce
  • Priscilla Mante
  • Sophie Anderson

These are the authors we will get to know really well over the year. We will research these authors and will read a range of their books each term. These books are in our reading corner so we can also choose to read them during story time.

As reading is so important to us at Carrwood, children in Year 5 Ivy will bring home a year group spine reading book and a reading for pleasure book to share with our families. Our book bags need to be brought into school every day so we can read to adults in school too. Books will be changed every Monday – please remember to bring your book bag into school!

Homework

We would really love you to focus on reading at home for homework. The more you read with your children the more confident and fluent they will become which will help them in all aspects of their learning. Please spend 5-10 minutes reading with your child every day.

Last year, the children completed the Multiplication Tables Check. It is really important that they continue to practise their times tables regularly so they don’t forget them. Below are some useful websites to help support your child.
