Modern Foreign Languages at Carrwood Primary School
Hola! (Hello)
At Carrwood Primary we teach Spanish within our timetabled MFL slots. Through teaching Spanish, we aim to inspire children to access the ‘Dream Big’ vision and broaden their awareness of the wider world. We want our children to want to explore the beauty of the world outside of Bradford. Spanish develops communication and thinking skills that can be fostered and used in all aspects of life. Learning a new language enables our children to become curious about different ways of life and cultures. It is a fundamental ingredient in preparing young people to be a part of a worldwide workforce. We provide our children with steps towards their language learning in future education and their life.
At Carrwood, we work hard to offer a number of curriculum enhancements and link our learning to key events in the Spanish calendar such as:
All of July: International Festival of Music and Dance, Granada
A celebration of flamenco and classical music that traces its origins back to the 1880s, and combines the vibrant energy of Spanish guitars, castanets and flamenco dancers.
August 28th: La Tomatina
This messy food fight festival is held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Bunol near to Valencia. Thousands upon thousands of people make their way from all corners of the world to fight in the ‘World’s Biggest Food Fight’ where more than one hundred tonnes of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets.
October 12th: Spanish National Day
The Fiesta Nacional de España is the national day of Spain. It is held annually and is a national holiday. It commemorates the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s first arrival in the Americas, a day also celebrated in some other countries, but not in the UK.
We also host our own Spanish day at school , celebrating all things cultural! Children are given the opportunity to cook and taste Spanish food, compete in flamenco dance competitions and produce work all about the country of Spain.
