What We Want Children to Learn
At Carrwood Primary School, we want children to develop a curiosity and fascination about the world and the people who live in it. Through geography, pupils learn about places, landscapes, environments and communities, both locally and across the globe.
Children will learn to:
- Understand where places are and how they are connected
- Explore human and physical geography, including settlements, climate, landforms and natural processes
- Develop a strong sense of place, starting with their local area in Bradford and West Yorkshire
- Understand how people and environments interact and affect one another
- Ask meaningful questions and use evidence to investigate geographical issues
- Build and confidently use a wide range of geographical vocabulary
Our curriculum helps pupils understand their role in an interconnected world and encourages them to care for their environment and communities.
How We Teach It
Geography at Carrwood is taught through a well‑sequenced curriculum, allowing children to revisit key concepts and develop them in greater depth as they move through school.
Key aspects of our teaching include:
- Learning that begins in Early Years, developing language, observation skills and a sense of place
- Clear progression through Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, building knowledge and skills step by step
- Regular opportunities for fieldwork and enquiry, where children observe, measure, record and present findings
- Use of maps, atlases, globes, digital mapping and ICT
- Strong emphasis on talk, discussion and oracy, helping children explain and justify their ideas
- Frequent retrieval practice to help children remember key knowledge over time
- Lessons carefully adapted so that all children can access learning, while maintaining high expectations
- Learning is assessed through mid-point and end of unit quizzes.
Geography learning is enriched through local studies, visits, outdoor learning and real-life contexts, helping children see geography as relevant and meaningful.
