Computing at Carrwood Primary School!
What We Want Children to Learn
Our Computing curriculum gives pupils the essential knowledge and skills to understand and use technology effectively in an ever-changing digital world. We encourage pupils to think logically, solve problems, and express their ideas through digital media, whether working independently or as part of a team. Children learn how to create and refine programs, explore how computers and networks function, and use a range of software to communicate and present information. A strong focus is also placed on staying safe online and using technology responsibly. The curriculum is carefully planned to be challenging, inclusive and in line with the National Curriculum, supporting all pupils—including those with SEND—to make strong progress and succeed.
How We Teach It
Our Computing curriculum is planned to build knowledge and skills progressively from Early Years to Year 6. The sequence of learning ensures pupils develop a secure understanding of key areas such as programming, digital tools and how technology works. Within each unit, pupils are introduced to new ideas, given time to practise important skills and then apply their learning in purposeful activities, such as creating digital content or solving challenges using technology. Teaching approaches include clear demonstrations, guided support and practical tasks, with important vocabulary and concepts regularly revisited to embed learning. We make links across the curriculum, particularly with subjects like maths and science, to show how computing connects to the wider world. Assessment is ongoing and includes teacher observation, class discussion, evidence from the weekly tasks set on the computing program, retrieval grids and reviewing pupils’ completed work.
What Children Will Achieve
At the end of each key stage, pupils will have built a solid grasp of core computing knowledge and the ability to use technology purposefully to address problems. They will be able to articulate their ideas clearly, apply subject-specific vocabulary and review digital work—both their own and others’—with increasing independence. Over time, their work will show clear development in areas such as coding, creating digital content and understanding how computer systems operate. By the end of Year 6, pupils will be equipped for the next stage of learning, with the confidence, resilience and critical thinking skills needed to succeed in a digital society.
Our Vision
At Carrwood Primary School, our Computing curriculum aims to develop inquisitive, confident and responsible learners who can engage with the digital world effectively. We want every child to have opportunities to explore technology, try out new ideas and build the skills needed to turn their thinking into meaningful digital outcomes. We encourage pupils to think logically, solve problems and reflect on their work with increasing independence. Our goal is to provide a curriculum that is both challenging and inclusive, enabling all pupils—including those with SEND—to succeed. Learning is carefully organised from Early Years to Year 6 so that knowledge develops step by step, with links to subjects such as maths and science to show how computing applies in real-life contexts. By the time pupils leave Year 6, they will have gained the confidence, resilience and critical thinking skills needed to adapt, problem-solve and participate positively in a rapidly changing digital world.
