What We Want Children to Learn
Our maths curriculum enables pupils to become confident, fluent and flexible thinkers who can apply their knowledge in a wide range of real‑life contexts. We aim for every child to develop secure understanding of number, strong reasoning skills and the ability to solve problems with accuracy and independence.
Learning is designed to be ambitious, inclusive and fully aligned with the National Curriculum so that all pupils, including those with SEND, can achieve well.
Pupils build a deep understanding of mathematical concepts through consistent exposure to key ideas, rich mathematical talk and opportunities to explore, represent and generalise. By developing fluency in number facts, times tables and calculation strategies, children gain the confidence needed to tackle increasingly complex mathematical challenges.
How We Teach It
Our curriculum is carefully sequenced from Early Years to Year 6, ensuring that knowledge and skills build securely over time. We follow Power Maths, a mastery approach that provides clear progression, strong modelling and opportunities for children to reason, explore and apply their learning in meaningful contexts.
To strengthen number fluency, we prioritise Mastering Number across EYFS, KS1 and KS2. These sessions support children in developing secure number sense, subitising skills, rapid recall of key facts and a deep understanding of the four operations. Practical resources and visual representations help pupils make connections and embed core concepts.
Lessons combine direct teaching, guided practice, discussion and independent problem solving. Mathematical vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited to support reasoning and explanation. Teachers assess understanding through observation, questioning, end‑of‑unit tasks and ongoing review of pupils’ work.
Children also have access to TT Rockstars enabling them to practise key skills at home and in school. Rapid recall of number facts and times tables is essential for success across the Maths curriculum, and these platforms help pupils build confidence and fluency.
What Children Will Achieve
Pupils leave each key stage with a secure grasp of number, a strong understanding of mathematical structures and the confidence to apply their knowledge independently. They can explain their thinking using accurate mathematical vocabulary, choose efficient strategies and solve problems logically and systematically.
Work produced across school shows clear progression in fluency, reasoning and problem‑solving skills. By the end of Year 6, pupils are well prepared for secondary mathematics and equipped with the resilience, curiosity and critical thinking needed to use maths confidently in the wider world.
