What We Want Children to Learn
Our science curriculum aims to inspire pupils to become analytical and reflective thinkers who question the world around them. Curiosity and deeper thinking are at the heart of our approach, and we aim to equip pupils with the disciplinary skills and substantive knowledge needed to think like scientists. Our science curriculum helps children understand how what they learn links to real life and future careers. From the earliest years, children learn about different science jobs and how science helps to solve real-world problems and global challenges. Pupils build key scientific knowledge about the world around them, including living things, materials, forces and environmental processes, while developing the skills needed to work scientifically.
How We Teach It
Our science curriculum is carefully sequenced and progressively designed to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum across each key stage. Pupils revisit key science topics regularly, allowing their knowledge and skills to build and deepen as they move through school. Through high‑quality teaching and purposeful enquiry opportunities, pupils develop secure scientific knowledge alongside key skills such as observing, predicting, investigating and evaluating evidence.
In the Foundation Stage, science is taught through the EYFS areas of Understanding the World, Communication and Language, and Personal, Social and Emotional Development. Science learning is introduced through play‑based and practical activities that encourage children to explore, observe, problem‑solve, predict and talk about the world around them. Children are encouraged to ask questions about why things happen and how things work, and to explore living things, materials and objects in their natural environments. These experiences help children begin to plan, investigate, record and evaluate their findings in an age‑appropriate way.
What Children Will Achieve
Pupils leave each key stage with a secure and growing understanding of key scientific ideas about the world around them, including living things, materials, forces and environmental processes. They are confident in using scientific skills such as observing, predicting, investigating and evaluating evidence, and can explain their thinking using appropriate scientific vocabulary. As pupils progress, their knowledge and skills deepen through regular revisiting of key topics, showing clear progression over time. By the end of Year 6, pupils are well prepared for the next stage of their education, with the curiosity, confidence and scientific thinking needed to understand the world, solve problems and engage positively with future learning and careers in science.
