What We Want Children to Learn

Our PSHE curriculum helps children understand how to stay safe, healthy and emotionally secure. We want pupils to:

  • Build positive relationships and celebrate diversity.
  • Understand how to recognise and manage their feelings.
  • Learn how to stay safe online and offline, including recognising risks and knowing how to seek help.
  • Develop key life skills such as teamwork, problem‑solving, financial awareness and decision‑making.
  • Understand their rights and responsibilities as members of a community.
  • Develop confidence, resilience and a strong sense of self‑worth.

Through exposure to a wide range of experiences and role models, children learn that they can aspire to be whoever they choose to be.

How We Teach It

We follow the Coram SCARF programme to ensure a clear, progressive and inclusive approach from Early Years to Year 6. From years 1-6 children study all six SCARF units: Me and My Relationships, Valuing Difference, Keeping Myself Safe, Rights and Responsibilities, Being My Best, and Growing and Changing.

Teaching is enriched through:

  • Curriculum events such as International Women’s Day, Black History Month, Anti‑Bullying Week and Aspirations Day.
  • Visitors and workshops, including Police and Community Support Officers, NSPCC educators, emergency service workers, charity representatives and a range of professionals from creative, technical and community backgrounds.
  • Regular circle times, guided by our school ethos statements, ensuring sessions are proactive, reflective and supportive.

Lessons combine discussion, role‑play, real‑life scenarios, digital safety education and structured reflection. Vocabulary and key concepts are revisited regularly to secure understanding.

What Children Will Achieve

By the end of their time at Carrwood, children will:

  • Understand how to stay physically and emotionally healthy.
  • Build positive, respectful relationships with others.
  • Recognise risks and know how to keep themselves safe, including online.
  • Develop resilience, confidence and the ability to express their thoughts and feelings.
  • Make informed choices and understand the impact of their actions.
  • Show ambition and believe in their ability to succeed.
  • Be well prepared for the next stage of their education and for life in modern Britain.

Their learning will be evident in their behaviour, their decision‑making and their growing independence as responsible, thoughtful young citizens.

Our Vision

PSHE at Carrwood Primary School empowers children to become confident, healthy and responsible individuals who can thrive in an ever‑changing world. Through the Coram SCARF programme, we nurture pupils who understand themselves, value others and make informed choices that keep them safe – both offline and online.

Our vision is for every child to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to manage their lives now and in the future. We want pupils to feel secure, respected and ambitious, with the confidence to “dream big” and believe they can shape their own futures. Through meaningful learning experiences, diverse role models and a strong focus on wellbeing, we aim to build resilience, raise aspirations and promote cultural capital for all.
