What We Want Children to Learn
Pupils develop creativity, visual awareness and cultural understanding, enabling them to express ideas confidently across a range of media. They build skills in drawing, painting, sculpture and mixed media while understanding key techniques, materials and artistic processes. Pupils explore the work of diverse artists, designers and craftspeople, broadening their perspectives. The curriculum is inclusive, challenging and aligned with the National Curriculum to ensure all pupils make strong creative progress.
How We Teach It
The curriculum is coherently sequenced from EYFS to Year 6, with learning organised into progressive units that develop control, technique and creativity over time. Teaching combines clear modelling, guided practice and opportunities for independent experimentation. Key skills are revisited to deepen understanding, and learning is enriched through links to historical and cultural contexts. Assessment is ongoing, using observation, discussion, sketchbooks and evaluation of both process and outcome.
What Children Will Achieve
By the end of each key stage, pupils demonstrate secure technical skills and the ability to communicate ideas creatively. They use artistic vocabulary accurately, reflect on their own and others’ work, and show clear progression in sketchbooks and final pieces. By Year 6, pupils are confident, resilient and well prepared for further study in art and design.
Our Vision
At Carrwood Primary School, we aim to inspire creativity and confident self-expression through a rich and inclusive art curriculum. Pupils are encouraged to experiment, collaborate and refine their ideas, developing independence and resilience. Structured progression and repeated practice ensure all learners, including those with SEND, achieve well. Exposure to a wide range of artists and traditions enables pupils to understand how art reflects diverse cultures, histories and perspectives. By the end of Year 6, pupils leave with a growing confidence in their creative abilities, and the imagination and curiosity to continue exploring and developing their artistic skills
