What We Want Children to Learn
Through our music curriculum, children learn to enjoy and appreciate music while developing confidence and creativity. They learn to sing, play instruments, listen carefully and create their own music. Children are introduced to a wide range of musical styles and cultures and learn how music works through rhythm, pulse, pitch and tempo. By working together and performing for others, children develop teamwork, self-expression and a lifelong enjoyment of music. Our curriculum is designed to be ambitious, inclusive and fully aligned with the National Curriculum, ensuring all pupils—including those with SEND—can achieve well.
How We Teach It
Music is taught through a progressive and carefully structured curriculum from EYFS to Key Stage 2. Lessons are delivered bi-weekly and are sequenced to build on prior learning, revisiting and developing musical skills over time. Each unit incorporates listening and appraising, singing, playing instruments, composing, improvising and performing.
Children learn through an active, practical approach, using their voices, classroom instruments and movement to explore musical concepts. Musical elements such as pulse, rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics and structure are introduced gradually and reinforced through repetition and clear modelling. High-quality audio and musical examples expose children to a wide range of genres, styles and cultures.
What Children Will Achieve
Through our music curriculum, children will develop a lifelong love of music while building confidence, creativity and collaboration. They will learn to listen and appraise a wide range of musical styles, use their voices expressively, play instruments with increasing control, and compose their own music. Children will develop a secure understanding of musical elements such as pulse, rhythm, pitch, tempo and dynamics, and will use musical vocabulary to talk about what they hear and create. By performing, composing and listening regularly, children will grow as reflective, resilient and enthusiastic musicians, able to work independently and as part of an ensemble.
Our Vision
As musicians at Carrwood Primary, our children will develop a love and understanding of music through listening to, composing, analysing, performing and making music together. Our children will aspire to develop a firm knowledge base of the key skills that underpin music. They will learn these skills through listening to a wide variety of music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions.
Our children will develop a belief that they too can become musicians and composers through the study of significant artists. They will learn to play instruments and develop their singing skills independently and collaboratively. Through singing and playing together, children will grow and develop in their musical abilities, resulting in an increasing sense of achievement.
